Black's pieces are: H = Biskni, moves like a Bishop but captures/checks like a Knight (value = 2.49 pawn); W = Rooman, moves like a Rook but captures like a non-royal King (value = 3.28 pawn); A = Archbishop, combines Bishop and Knight movement (value = 6.79); G = Manroo, moves like a non-royal King but captures/checks like a Rook (value = 3.74). Otherwise the rules are those of chess, except there is no castling; pawns promote to Queen (value = 8.50), Rook (value = 4.26), Bishop (value = 3.28), or Knight (value = 2.97). All the rules of Chess apply except that the King's normal move is replace by that of a Grasshopper and that stalemate's are a loss for the stalemated player. In order to move or capture, the grasshopper king (shown as an inverted king) must jump over a piece and land on the square immediately beyond that piece. The king may jump orthogonally or diagonally.Note that because of the asymmetrical King movement it is possible for the Kings to give check and even checkmate to one another.

New Shogi. The 'Keima (桂馬)' has been removed, and the 'Copper General (銅将)', 'Drunken Elephant (酔象)', and 'Knight (騎士)' have been added. With the exception of the King, all pieces can move like the King upon promotion, in addition to their existing movement. Pawn drop checkmates are also possible, and there are no draws.

The king is a normal king (the K piece); the knight is a normal knight (the N piece); pawns are normal pawns (the P pieces), they can move two squares in the first move and capture en-passant and they promote to Vegui (the P+ piece) that moves like a king but you don't chekmate it; the cardinal (the C piece) moves like a bishop+king so it isn't stuck in one colour; the monk moves 1 square diagonally and promotes to a cardinal; the imperial (the I piece) moves like a rook + king; the soldier (the S piece) moves one square horizontally or vertically and promotes to an imperial. Castling is disabled and statlemate is a draw.
